THE 411 ON CELERY JUICE

Happy Sunday + Happy New Year, too! I know it’s been a while since a new DARLA post has been published. As EIC, I’ve been real focused on my health and nurturing my wealth of knowledge. During this time of thorough self-care and a lil grind, I’ve published a poetry book, joined a dance class that focuses on balancing energy flow, worked with some inspiring creators, created an E-book of 21 plant-based recipes, curated some playlists, and read lots of books (naturally) — all of which I’ll be sharing details on, later… But what I’m thrilled to tell you about today is how I’ve been drinking HELLA celery juice.

TO LIVE + S.L.A.Y. (SELF-LOVE AND YOGA) WITH TEACHER, ADRIANA ADELE

It was an overcast afternoon, yet still one to appreciate during this new transition into fall, when I went to meet Adriana Adelé for tea and a conversation about her experiences as a yoga instructor. I first came across Adriana’s work on Instagram during a search to find a yoga studio and instructor to begin practicing with. As a black woman myself, Adriana’s account was one that instantly stood out to me for connection.

A HEALING TRIP WITH JHENE AIKO'S M.A.P. PROJECT

It’s been one year since singer/songwriter Jhené Aiko released a three part project, or M.A.P. (movie, album, and poetry book), that was created to guide her back to her purest, most authentic form. In a mission statement for the project, Jhené discussed how when she lost her brother, Miyagi Chilombo, to an inoperable brain tumor in 2012, she also lost herself… And that over the years, she has used writing and creating music as therapy while taking, both physical and drug-induced, trips to escape anything too familiar that could remind her of her brother’s absence.

#SELFCARESERIES: DEVELOPING HEALTHY SLEEPING HABITS

Whenever you find yourself feeling off-balanced and out of sorts, the cause can usually be discovered within the ways you've been taking care of yourself. It's no secret that our eating and sleeping habits have a direct correlation to the way we feel and are, arguably, the most important aspects of our lives... But somehow we still find it hard to maintain healthy patterns in these areas; especially sleep.

HOW CREATING ART JOURNALS HELPED ME COPE WITH ANXIETY

Ever since high school, I felt there was something about me that was different from my classmates. I didn’t know what it was or how to explain it, but I knew it was something because I would become physically sick at the thought of spending another day in school, being around so many people at once... There were times where I felt suffocated in my surroundings. It eventually got so bad that I was sent to the hospital during my freshman year of college. I didn’t understand why I was feeling this way until that very moment I was laying in my hospital bed; that moment explained it all: I had anxiety.

#SELFCARESERIES: 7 KEYS TO SERENITY BY SERGE MAZERAND

In a world of massive disruption and distraction, of obsessive connection to the internet and to our devices, ironically, we have come to lose the most important connection: the relationship with our essential self. In subtle and less subtle ways, this disconnect creates significant stress and anxiety that often lead to illness.

So, how do we reconnect?

#SELFCARESERIES PART 2: DIFFERENT TYPES OF SELF-CARE

In part one, we discussed what self-care is, its importance, how it can differ for people and situations, and the four categories (physical, mental/emotional, spiritual, and social). Now, it’s time to explore those categories, and what we can actually do to practice self-care.

#SELFCARESERIES PART 1: WHAT IS SELF-CARE?

When many people think of self-care they may think of face masks, meditation, pedicures, or even #WineWednesdays. While those all can be valid ways to practice self-care, do we really know what it means?

DARLA has decided to tackle the topic of self-care to give you all the ins and outs in a four part series for November:

#THC: A HIGHER PERSPECTIVE

Marijuana is considered to be the divine feminine energy; a source that connects us to love and creation. This powerful female plant naturally heals, enlightens, and elevates. Marijuana has worked wonders for "incurable" cancer patients and people suffering from other serious/chronic illnesses. It has been proven to reduce stress and anxiety, relieve symptoms of depression, and to be an effective treatment for veterans suffering from PTSD.
