SINGER/SONGWRITER KAYLA BRIANNA SHOWS US WHY YOU CAN'T CHEAT THE GRIND

In a world so heavily influenced by the media and strategized content, it's easy to mistake something faux for what's real. When it comes to becoming "famous," it seems to only take some good selfie angles and a high social media following to make it happen... But when it comes to achieving longevity and making a solid impact, "You can't cheat the grind..." And that's word to Kayla Brianna — a girl who knows, firsthand, what it's like working in Hollywood.

With being born and raised in a family that was immersed in music and the entertainment industry, it was only natural that singer/songwriter, Kayla Brianna pursue a career in performing arts, empowered by her business-savvy mindset. Through her interests and continuously nurtured skills in music, acting, and fashion... She has been able to make a name for herself, showcasing her versatility as an artist.

Kayla has gone from doing covers on Soundcloud, to releasing hit singles you've probably heard in the club like, "Work for It" (featuring YFN Lucci), to opening up shows for artists like K. Michelle, to now preparing for the release of her new EP and a movie she just finished up filming.

The grind doesn't stop for Kayla but she made time during a self-care Sunday to share insight to her lifestyle as a rising pop star with DARLA. Check out the exclusive interview with Kayla Brianna below.

DARLA: How are you feeling today?
Kayla Brianna: Hey! I'm feeling great and relaxed since it's Sunday.

What inspired you to start making music?
My family inspired me to make music. My grandfather is in the Songwriters Hall of Fame and my grandmother sang background for Ray Charles.

You recently did some shows on tour with K.Michelle — is this your first tour? What are some ways you maintain good energy flow during this time?
This isn't my first tour but it has been a while since I've been on the road. I make sure to pray before each show, learn from each show with what my dancers and I can do better. It also feels good every night to feed off the crowd’s energy and see them singing back my songs to me!

What are some of your creative interests that play a big role in your life outside of music?
Acting, drawing and writing are some other ways that I feed my creativity everyday. Just getting my thoughts or feelings out in another way then music is great.

Can you share insight to any new projects you’ve been working on?
Yes! I just finished filming a movie in Mississippi and I'm super excited because it was my first film. I learned so much from my cast and can't wait to work on other projects. I'll also be releasing my EP later this year.

What’s the most raw piece of music you’ve written/created? What does it mean to you?
I think the most raw piece of music I created was a song called, "Confused" that I wrote with Verse Simmonds. I'm excited for the world to hear it and get a different side of me as an artist. It's about my first relationship and I feel like everyone can relate to it and has been there before.

What do you hope to achieve with your work — what do you want your personal brand to represent to the world?
I want my music to be relatable. I have songs about heartbreak, about going out and having fun and just embracing yourself. I want people to relate to a song in any aspect of their life they are in.

What’s a moment/lesson from your career thus far that has impacted you as a person?
When I was with Interscope Records I learned so much about myself as a person and an artist. I learned how to say "no" and not feel like I have to adjust to people's idea of how THEY see me as an artist but to remain true to myself.

Who is a woman from history who inspires you?
My mother inspires me. She's taught me everything I know and almost in every situation I'm in, I can hear my mom's voice telling me what to do whether or not she's physically there.

What’s some advice you’d give to a younger version of yourself in need of motivation to get started?
I would tell my younger self to do something everyday to further my career. You can't cheat the grind!

How would you spend the perfect Sunday with no rules or restrictions?
Literally my perfect Sunday is what I'm doing right now... comfy in bed with Netflix and Postmates on the way! Lol
