A HEALING TRIP WITH JHENE AIKO'S M.A.P. PROJECT

It’s been one year since singer/songwriter Jhené Aiko released a three part project, or M.A.P. (movie, album, and poetry book), that was created to guide her back to her purest, most authentic form. In a mission statement for the project, Jhené discussed how when she lost her brother, Miyagi Chilombo, to an inoperable brain tumor in 2012, she also lost herself… And that over the years, she has used writing and creating music as therapy while taking, both physical and drug-induced, trips to escape anything too familiar that could remind her of her brother’s absence.

BRINGING HAPPINESS BACK TO MUSIC WITH IMANí SCOTT

The philosophy behind DARLA is that we can all make our “Dreams And Real Life Align” by following our hearts, working hard, and taking care of ourselves in the process. We love having conversations about what triggers inspiration and drives us to push through to achieve our goals. We recently had the opportunity to connect with Imani Scott — a singer/songwriter from Houston, Texas. Imani started her own record label upcon graduating from college and combined her knowledge of business fundamentals with her art + creativity. Check out our interview below for Imani’s insight on music, developing healthy eating habits, and more.

SINGER/SONGWRITER + ACTRESS CRISTINA LIZZUL TALKS ABOUT GETTING BACK TO MUSIC WITH HER NEW SINGLE, "APOLOGIES"

When we first spoke to Cristina Lizzul almost two years ago, she had just put out her debut EP, Percipience and gave us some insight to her life as a Singer/Actress living between Los Angeles and Italy. She's proven herself to be an artist who's dedicated to the grind of making her dreams a reality as well as one who's passionate about sharing her raw experiences; channeling her thoughts and feelings through the art creative expression. Whether it's through an acting role, or writing a song, one of her main goals is to create something that people can feel; something they can relate to.

SINGER/SONGWRITER KAYLA BRIANNA SHOWS US WHY YOU CAN'T CHEAT THE GRIND

In a world so heavily influenced by the media and strategized content, it's easy to mistake something faux for what's real. When it comes to becoming "famous," it seems to only take some good selfie angles and a high social media following to make it happen... But when it comes to achieving longevity and making a solid impact, "You can't cheat the grind..." And that's word to Kayla Brianna — a girl who knows, firsthand, what it's like working in Hollywood.

SINGER/SONGWRITER ALEX VAUGHN'S AV + FRIENDS SEND OFF PARTY

When working towards making Dreams And Real Life Align, every move (major and minor) is a part of discovering and building on the bigger purpose. We don't always notice as it's happening and we may go through rough patches of situations that make us doubt the process, but like R&B Singer/Songwriter Alex Vaughn says in her song, "Blessings": Anything you want is waiting all for you, but you just gotta breathe to receive all the blessings.

#HEYWECOLLAB ART SERIES BY @DINAFAIRYCAKE + @HEYSHEDRAWS

Magic is made when we collaborate. There's no limit to what we can accomplish through inspiration and creativity, especially when we join forces. Two artists bring this truth to light with a social media-based collaborative art series, #HeyWeCollab. Inspired by each other's art and the work of other creative women, Dina Baez + Nikki Moon linked up to create a #WCW series in which they translate their inspiration from music and feminist values into paintings. Thus far, this project has resulted in unique pieces of artwork reflecting creative women such as Kehlani, SZA, Cardi B and Willow Smith. With #HeyWeCollab Nikki + Dina each create a painting in their own style.

AUDIOVISUAL: SUNNIE X SETTLE

At the top of the Editor's List this week is Indie R&B Artist, Sunnie + the video for her song, "Settle." A creative and timeless sample of Erykah Badu's, "Next Lifetime..." Sunnie's, "Settle" tells a story of an anti-relationship-yet-still-special kind of love... One of my favorite tracks from her latest album, Magic. This classic, indie film-inspired video directed by Sam Lans provides the perfect visuals to complement Sunnie's effortlessly confident lyrical ability + dreamy harmonies. A flawless collaboration.

STAYING TRUE TO YOURSELF AS AN ARTIST + INTROVERT

It’s a Friday night and you were invited to come to an art show. It’s a great way to network, meet fellow artists and maybe even get an opportunity to showcase your own work. You are ready to go mix and mingle but then all of a sudden you think of all of the reasons not to go. It will be crowded, loud and you simply hate networking. Just the thought of being around so many different people all at the same time drains you... And at that very moment, you decide to stay home to work on some new projects instead.

KEHLANI UNITES AND GIVES BACK TO LOCAL COMMUNITIES DURING HER SWEETSEXYSAVAGE TOUR

A night at the SweetSexySavage Tour was one of those events people will tell their grandchildren about in the future. DARLA attended the Philadelphia show of Kehlani's tour on July 10th at the Electric Factory and we're happy to have been able to witness such a beautiful night. Hours before the show begun, fans were lined up for blocks outside in hopes of getting a good spot close to the stage.

This summer, FRIDAY BY FRIDAY is back with a new collection for Season 6 and an even deeper message to convey than last time.

CRISTINA LIZZUL: SINGER/SONGWRITER + ACTRESS

When you have a real hunger to win and a real love for putting in work, seeing results seems much more rewarding than it would had you been comfortable with just chillin' in the lost world of idle time. The journey of getting to our goals has the potential to be a long and physically/mentally draining process, but the most driven learn how to embrace all that comes with grind to success.

LOUISE CHANTAL: R&B ARTIST + PRINCE$$ OF ARANBI

Louise Chantál is an independent artist who is changing the world by creating one of her own. Being passionately concerned about the lack of accurate representation of women of color in the media is what lead LC to create the world of Aranbi, which she describes as a place that will be for the misrepresented or underrepresented to have a voice. The Prince$$ of Aranbi is also a Queen of Underground R&B, racking up over a million plays collectively on her original songs and mashups via Soundcloud.

ALICIA PINCKNEY: G.LEON 1938

The world is currently bursting with artistic entrepreneurs, ARTrepreneurs, who are turning what they create into a business of their own and it's totally intriguing to come across a girl whose art is focused on improving the lives of those in need... Men. It's official; menswear by a woman is the new easy ticket to an on-point wardrobe... So get ready for it! (After all, who can style guys better than we can?) This talented designer, from Darla Magazine's home-city, hit the ground running after graduating college and has been currently getting some remarkable international growth and exposure for her brand. Meet Alicia Pinckney, a 24 year old menswear designer from Philadelphia, PA. In 2013 she obtained her BA degree in Fashion Design from Philadelphia University. APRIL MELCHOIR: DESIGNER AND OWNER OF URBAN WORKS TEXTILES

There's something really outstanding about those who use their talents in unexpected ways; the ones who don't necessarily travel down the "right" path.... But create their own. This is what came to mind when I learned about April Melchoir, one of the first recipients of Sophia Amoruso's #GIRLBOSS foundation grant. Upon receiving her Bachelor's of Fine Arts degree in Illustration from University of the Arts in 2012, April created Urban Works Textiles — a small home decor and textile business. With the creation of this business, April was able to merge her love of illustration and design with her growing passion to sew.
