LETTER FROM THE EDITOR: YEAR 4

I woke up around 5:50am this morning. I meditated for about 20 minutes, listened to Bob Marley (“Three Little Birds” has been the morning theme song this week), and had a cup of tea with my aunt… We talked about our dreams and synchronicities and what it all means. Today is my mother’s birthday, so it’s one of my favorite days of the year… And it’s also the day I launched the DARLA website, 4 years ago.

A HEALING TRIP WITH JHENE AIKO'S M.A.P. PROJECT

It’s been one year since singer/songwriter Jhené Aiko released a three part project, or M.A.P. (movie, album, and poetry book), that was created to guide her back to her purest, most authentic form. In a mission statement for the project, Jhené discussed how when she lost her brother, Miyagi Chilombo, to an inoperable brain tumor in 2012, she also lost herself… And that over the years, she has used writing and creating music as therapy while taking, both physical and drug-induced, trips to escape anything too familiar that could remind her of her brother’s absence.

#HEYWECOLLAB ART SERIES BY @DINAFAIRYCAKE + @HEYSHEDRAWS

Magic is made when we collaborate. There's no limit to what we can accomplish through inspiration and creativity, especially when we join forces. Two artists bring this truth to light with a social media-based collaborative art series, #HeyWeCollab. Inspired by each other's art and the work of other creative women, Dina Baez + Nikki Moon linked up to create a #WCW series in which they translate their inspiration from music and feminist values into paintings. Thus far, this project has resulted in unique pieces of artwork reflecting creative women such as Kehlani, SZA, Cardi B and Willow Smith. With #HeyWeCollab Nikki + Dina each create a painting in their own style.

How do we sincerely express our concerns or love without getting weird about it? While greeting cards are usually the go-to approach for acknowledging things like birthdays, the loss of a loved one, and every special occasion in between, the $8 billion industry has become repetitive and often wasteful... Especially for creative, conscious consumers like us. There's a new greeting card company coming out of the Bay Area that responds to this by answering our biggest questions with a transformative business model more in alignment with our needs and interests: Thoughtful Human.

HOW CREATING ART JOURNALS HELPED ME COPE WITH ANXIETY

Ever since high school, I felt there was something about me that was different from my classmates. I didn’t know what it was or how to explain it, but I knew it was something because I would become physically sick at the thought of spending another day in school, being around so many people at once... There were times where I felt suffocated in my surroundings. It eventually got so bad that I was sent to the hospital during my freshman year of college. I didn’t understand why I was feeling this way until that very moment I was laying in my hospital bed; that moment explained it all: I had anxiety.

Just the thought of being around so many different people all at the same time drains you... And at that very moment, you decide to stay home to work on some new projects instead.

FRIDAY BY FRIDAY

One of my favorite quotes by Coco Chanel, "In order to be irreplaceable, one must always be different," is what immediately came to mind when I learned about Friday Lynton, a Brooklyn born and raised fashion designer and owner of FRIDAY BY FRIDAY. After attending LIM College in Midtown Manhattan, Friday ventured out to create a brand of her own that is different from any other I've ever seen. She combined her knowledge of business with her creativity and love for fashion to create FRIDAY BY FRIDAY — a line of handcrafted clothing and objects made from chains.

MDM FLOW BY FLORENCE ADEPOJU

There aren't too many things us fashion and beauty junkies love more than a new lipstick; especially a badd ass lipstick that was created by a badd ass girl... And by "badd ass girl" I mean Florence Adepoju — the Founder of MDMflow; a London based luxury lipstick line inspired by 90's and early millennium hip-hop culture. Florence, also known as Flow, describes MDMflow as being the younger version of herself translated into a cosmetic brand. More than just being a product of the hip-hop culture from the past, MDMflow reflects the attitudes of young women with eccentric and unique styles.

APRIL MELCHOIR: DESIGNER AND OWNER OF URBAN WORKS TEXTILES

There's something really outstanding about those who use their talents in unexpected ways; the ones who don't necessarily travel down the "right" path.... But create their own. This is what came to mind when I learned about April Melchoir, one of the first recipients of Sophia Amoruso's #GIRLBOSS foundation grant. Upon receiving her Bachelor's of Fine Arts degree in Illustration from University of the Arts in 2012, April created Urban Works Textiles — a small home decor and textile business. With the creation of this business, April was able to merge her love of illustration and design with her growing passion to sew.
